This together with the Christmas Market Marque, where local food producers exhibit all the very best of Cornish Food! An Ode to Chalky

23rd January 2015

An Ode to Chalky

Some of our regular visitors, devotees of ‘Chalky’ Stein, regularly pay homage to his image
(just outside the entrance to The Seafood Restaurant). On their last visit, they left this delightful Ode to Chalky in the Cottage Diary:

An Ode to Chalky

If you wake at midnight and hear a little dog bark,
Down in old Padstow town, when all is quiet and dark,
Don’t go drawing back the blind, nor looking in the street,
‘Tis just the sound of Chalky Stein, walking round his beat.

The sound of Jack Russell footsteps trotting through dark,
Sniffing at the lamppost, snapping in the park,
Best not to ask at Rick’s place, you won’t find him there,
‘Tis just the ghost of Chalky Stein, taking the cool night air.
When all the lights are turned off, and all the dishes done,
When all the shops are closed, and the children had their fun,
Something stirs by the harbour-side, a growl, a doggy whine,
And round the streets of Padstow, pads the ghost of Chalky Stein.

So if you see a paw print down by Polzeath beach,
Or if a bone goes missing, though it might be out of reach,
If your cat hides away and keeps looking at the door,
And the big brown rats leave town - don’t you ask no more.

For the sound of Jack Russell’s footsteps, trotting through the dark,
Echoing past the boat masts, rabbeting for a lark,
Are heard in Padstow town, still, ringing in the street,
For ‘tis just the sound of Chalky Stein walking round his beat.

Top Walking Tip...

Top Walking Tip...

What variety! High cliffs, rocky coves, golden sands, river estuary, amazing wildlife, thundering surf, endless views - and the SW Coast Path passes right alongside as it wends its way through Padstow on its journey northwards towards Hartland Point and west to Land’s End and beyond.

This truly spectacular national footpath attracts walkers from all over the country whether out for an afternoon stroll or just passing through as they attempt the complete (or part) 360 miles route. And if the Coast Path is not what you are looking for there are several other walks in and around the town.

The Padstow Circular Walk is a fine example. Starting at the harbour, the 7 miles (10km) walk takes in a huge variety of interesting scenery from the estuary sands to the exposed headland and the rolling green fields that are such a prominent feature of the area. Just don’t forget the camera! The lookout high on Stepper Point keeps watch during daylight hours 365 days a spectacular coastal landscape year. Ideally situated to cover the notorious Doom Bar that crosses the estuary and which is a well known hazard to local shipping, it is also perfectly placed to monitor the crowds having fun on the nearby surfing beaches. If you’re passing by why not call in on the duty officer for a chat.

The ‘Padstow Circular Walk’ Guide is on sale at Padstow Tourist Information Centre together with Ordnance Survey maps and a good selection of books about local walks and footpaths.
